A Few Tense Days Ago...

Intro:

So... Windows 8? Love it or hate it? So far I love it and I am NOT an early adopter... at all. In fact installing the latest Windows 8.1 upgrade for free (thank you Microsoft for not being the total shit we know you are and charging us for it) I had a total system meltdown.
That's right!

A TOTAL SYSTEM MELTDOWN.
The mere words make computer-boys all over the world wet themselves in fear.
Yup. I couldn't boot my computer... at all. NG. No Good. Nada. Access Negados! You Lose! You're a Loser! Thank you for playing and get off the set.

The Story:

I had literally salivated all day long, watching Google Sites, Microsoft Sites and all the good Nerd sites (love you) for the latest link to the Windows 8.1 upgrade! I REALLY couldn't wait! I was TOTALLY freaking out!

As soon as it (any link at all) was there I freaking clicking on it.
You wanna install a K(blah blah blah) update to my pc? Fine go for it, download it, install it and reboot? Sure! yay!...Whoo hoo...hoo. uh... what?...um...

Uh...

Ut oh...

BSOD! WTF?!! NO!

...Fine. Reset button.

These things happen. No big deal.

Wait wait wait.

Another BSOD! This one with some kind of fucking emoticon of "sadness". W-T-F?!

Fine! Shut down and wait a moment. Hard power Restart with fingers (seriously) crossed.

BSOD (again)... oh (kill me now...) fuck...

Realization: It's over. It's gone. It's really ALL gone. All of it!

I really had lost all of my profile settings and all user specific data. All of it. Gone. No backup. No trace.

To be fair to the big MS, "some" of that is my fault. I freely admit it. I hovered over the next button on "did you make a backup?" for a while, even though I had not made a backup. I figured 8 to 8.1 how big a leap is that? Really? Bigger than I thought.

So seriously, it was almost a teary eyed moment when I realized my PC was dead, no matter how many times I rebooted it, it was NOT going to start anything with a mouse or anything I could click on to get Windows to do anything at all.

I was, in short, ...devastated.

Action:

So what did I do? I whipped out out my Windows 8 CD/DVD and I reinstalled Windows 8. This took some time and I was soooo upset at having to do it, but finally I had a logon prompt and I used it.
Then... I installed the basics for me. Email, Firefox ,Visual Studio 2012,  etc.

A day later I did the Windows 8.1 update from the ISOs without ANY issues at all.

Conclusion:

So... Windows 8? Love it or hate it?

I must be a friggin' total dildo, because "old-school me", even after all of that... still loves it.

Down with DOMA! YAY... or is it?

Read my Any Ten People first! Then com back here.

So dude, hey! Down with DOMA! Huh! Down with Prop 8!
It must feel really great being a gay man, living now, right?

Um...

Somewhat... yes. A Little bit. I have yet to fully decide what my true feelings on this issue are. I am middle of the road here and I have feelings and thoughts one way and the other. Trust me, though, you will know when I make a final decision.

Any Ten People

My Oversimplified view of any "Society"

Lets talk in broad strokes for a minute here. Lets not get bogged down on all the critical details for just one freakin' second. Okay? Can you do that for me? Huh?

In general, if you were to randomly take ten people from all over the world and put them in a large complex where life is possible, with good food and water, and shelter, and waste extraction, and no real law or government... within a week, at most (maybe even the first few hours), they will have developed some way of making decisions for the group that everyone can at least appear to live with. That is/was the natural basis of governments all across the globe.

Sure, these ten random people may be of different gender, color, sexual persuasion, creed, economic status, or even speak a different language, but it is the way of humankind to be curious and to learn and to find patterns and to cope with situations and to adapt. None of us would be here reading this if this was not the case.

If you understand this, (and that's a big IF) then you must also understand that the government and laws of any society are sanctioned by that society.  For you cannot have a majority of people saying one thing while the law dictates they are to say something else.

You may argue that Communism can do this, true, but Communism has not proven itself long-term and for the most part the Democracies have. I grant you that I make this one assumption for my point to be valid.

To be very clear in my opinion...

Democracy is defined by one (1) sheep and five (5) wolves deciding what is for dinner.  I cannot recall who exactly said that but it is very clever and very true.

If you are in the minority in a Democracy by default you have nothing. You are owed nothing and you shall have no voice in politics or society. Now add a currency and several religions into the mix and you have... tada, the "United States of America".

Hi there. I am a proud American. No really, I DO love my country, warts and all, as they say.

But, it is up to those with no voice to create one in any society... or they shall be ignored.
